The first RTL simulators were either pricey workstation-based tools or PC-based efforts most engineers didn’t consider serious tools. Early HDL simulators fit into the first category, until a 3-man start-up from Oregon produced a serious, PC-based simulator at an affordable price. Design teams then found they could cut tool costs by mixing old, high-end simulators with their new PC-based tool. The design environment took an evolutionary leap, and the company that made it possible was
Model Technology.

Founded in May of 1990,
Model Technology had produced the HDL simulator ModelSim with an exceptional user interface supported over the phone by a small staff. Without a big sales force or a top-heavy support organization, they were still able to dominate the market, move beyond the PC to workstations and handle a whole new level of design complexity.
Model Technology has made it a habit to be first. Delivering innovation to market first pushes us to the limits of our ingenuity and energy. As a result Model Technology has achieved an enviable record of advances in simulation technology. Why the rhino? We feel it reflects the powerful and dominant position we’ve enjoyed in the industry.

Model Technology has built a worldwide distribution network and enjoys rapid sales growth from year to year. On December 1, 1994, the company became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mentor Graphics. The tradition of being first, delivering high quality, easy to use and affordable simulation tools, continues and with an expanded sales and delivery capabilities provided by Mentor Graphics, we are extremely well positioned for the next wave of technology innovation.
